Beyond Money:
"Just as the present networking of personal computers on the internet provides unprecedented power for peer-to-peer communications and access to information, the outlook for the future is for networks of credit clearing services that provide easy and efficient non-cash payment possibilities for all kinds of purchases and sales."
Interesting but not convincing. I like the option to remove money completely from whatever payment and clearing systems are available if I'm not happy with what is on offer:
"Savers who feel that the rate of interest is too low will exchange their bank notes and deposits for gold coins. In this manner savers retain direct control over the level of bank reserves as they confront the bank with the choice of either raising the lending rate or contracting bank credit. Thus the mechanism that regulates the rate of interest is the savers’ privilege to hoard gold. Any effort to tamper with this mechanism is certain to introduce distortions in the economy." (Fekete)
