Hiyal

“The practice of lending at interest … was … well known in the Meccan society. …It was undoubtedly practised very extensively in subsequent times, despite the Koran’s prohibition of riba.

…The doctors of the Law demonstrated great ingenuity in finding ways of getting round the theoretical prohibitions. These methods have a name in Arabic: hiyal, meaning ruses, or wiles.”
